What Are Grid Services? And Can Your Battery Storage System Earn From Them?

If you own a commercial battery energy storage system, or you are evaluating one, you may have come across the term grid services. It gets mentioned in sales conversations, in battery storage brochures and in articles about energy storage — often without a clear explanation of what it actually means, what the revenue opportunity looks like or whether it is relevant to your situation.

This post answers those questions plainly. No technical jargon beyond what is necessary.

What Are Grid Services?

The UK electricity grid operates at a frequency of 50 hertz. When supply and demand are in balance, frequency stays at 50Hz. When there is more generation than demand, or more demand than generation, frequency deviates from that target.

National Grid ESO, the organisation responsible for balancing the UK’s electricity system, manages this frequency through a range of mechanisms. Historically, this involved large gas turbines that could ramp up or down in response to frequency changes. As the UK has added more renewable generation such as wind and solar power, which fluctuate with weather conditions, the frequency balancing challenge has become more complex, and the need for fast-responding balancing assets has grown.

Battery energy storage systems are exceptionally well suited to this role. A battery can respond to a frequency deviation within fractions of a second which is far faster than any gas turbine. National Grid ESO recognised this and developed a suite of grid services specifically designed for battery storage and other fast-response assets.

Grid services, in this context, means the set of contracts under which National Grid ESO pays battery owners for the ability to charge or discharge rapidly in response to grid frequency events. The battery provides a service to the grid operator. The grid operator pays for it.

The Main Grid Services Available to Battery Owners

The UK grid services market has evolved considerably since it was first introduced. The current suite of primary frequency response services includes three main products.

Dynamic Containment is the primary frequency response service in the current UK market. It pays battery owners to hold a proportion of their battery capacity in reserve and to respond automatically within one second if grid frequency deviates significantly from 50Hz. Dynamic Containment is procured in 24-hour blocks on a day-ahead basis, which gives battery owners daily visibility of the contract value. The service pays a capacity payment; a fixed rate per megawatt of capacity contracted regardless of whether the battery is actually called upon to respond.

Dynamic Moderation and Dynamic Regulation are two further frequency response services introduced as part of the reform of the UK grid services market. They operate at different frequency thresholds from Dynamic Containment and offer different capacity payment rates. Fast frequency response has been replaced by Dynamic Containment plus Dynamic Moderation and Dynamic Regulation as the primary frequency response products in the UK market.

Beyond frequency response, battery owners can also participate in the Balancing Mechanism; the real-time market through which National Grid ESO balances supply and demand in the final minutes before delivery. National Grid ESO has enabled battery storage owners to stack revenues from Dynamic Containment with revenues earned from the Balancing Mechanism, allowing owners to earn from both sources simultaneously.

How the Revenue Works

Grid services revenue for battery storage typically takes the form of a capacity payment. This means you are paid for making capacity available, not just for when you are called upon to use it. The rate per megawatt varies by service and by the competitive procurement process through which contracts are awarded.

The UK now has around 5.5 GWh of electrical energy storage, but the amount contracted to provide frequency response services has plateaued in recent years. This reflects a simple supply-and-demand dynamic: as more battery capacity has been built, the available revenue per megawatt from frequency response services has reduced. As the volume of installed battery capacity outstrips demand from Dynamic Containment and other frequency services, attention has turned to the merchant market and revenue stacking.

This is an important nuance for commercial battery storage clients to understand. Grid services revenue is a genuine additional income stream — but it is not the primary financial case for a commercial battery PV system in most situations, and the available rates are lower than they were when the market was less competitive.

The more compelling case for most commercial clients remains energy cost reduction through self-consumption, load shifting and peak shaving. Grid services are a meaningful addition to that case, not a replacement for it.

Using Battery Storage Systems for Revenue Stacking — Getting More Than One Income Stream

The most financially attractive position for a commercial battery storage system is one where multiple revenue streams are stacked. The battery earns from grid services when frequency response is required, and optimises self-consumption, load shifting and peak shaving the rest of the time.

This is technically possible and increasingly common for larger commercial systems. Battery storage assets can tender for bids in both the Balancing Mechanism and Dynamic Containment during the same periods, allowing revenues to be stacked across services.

Achieving revenue stacking requires a battery management system configured to handle multiple simultaneous objectives, and typically requires a relationship with a battery aggregator or optimiser — a company that manages the battery’s participation in grid services markets on behalf of the owner, typically in exchange for a share of the revenue earned.

Who Can Participate in Grid Services

Grid services participation is not available to every battery storage system. There are practical eligibility requirements that determine whether a given system can participate.

System size is the primary constraint for most commercial clients. Most grid services contracts are procured in units of one megawatt or above. For the majority of commercial rooftop battery installations — which typically range from 50 to 500 kWh of capacity — direct participation in National Grid ESO grid services markets is not practical. This is where aggregators play a role: they pool capacity from multiple smaller systems into a combined offering that meets the minimum contract size.

Response capability matters for frequency response services. The battery and its inverter must be capable of responding within the specified timeframe — typically within one second for Dynamic Containment. Not all commercial battery systems are configured to deliver this response capability as standard.

Metering and connection requirements vary by service. Most frequency response services require a half-hourly settled metering arrangement and a grid connection that can support the required import and export profile.

For most commercial clients with battery systems in the 50 to 500 kWh range, the most accessible route into grid services is through an aggregator relationship. An aggregator manages the technical requirements, pools capacity with other assets and distributes revenue to participating owners. Is Grid Services Revenue Worth Pursuing for Your Business?

The honest answer depends on your system size, your primary objectives for the commercial battery storage system and the current state of the grid services market.

For commercial clients whose primary battery objective is energy cost reduction through self-consumption of solar PV generation, load shifting and peak shaving, grid services revenue is a genuine additional income stream that improves the overall return on the investment. It should not, however, be the primary justification for a commercial battery installation. The energy cost reduction case stands on its own.

For larger commercial and industrial clients with systems above 500 kWh, direct grid services participation or aggregation becomes more financially meaningful and is worth pursuing from the point of commissioning.
