Home Solar Panel Repairs and Fault Finding

Diagnose and fix solar faults. Trusted solar PV engineers.

If your solar panel system has stopped generating power, is underperforming or showing a fault, SPI Renewables can diagnose and repair it. We work on systems we installed and systems we did not, including those where the original installer is no longer available.

When Your Home Solar Panel System Needs Attention

Solar panel systems are generally reliable but they do develop faults. An inverter failure, a failed DC isolator, a damaged panel, a wiring fault or a battery system issue can all reduce output significantly or stop power generation entirely. The challenge for most homeowners is identifying what the fault is and finding a qualified engineer to fix it.

SPI Renewables provides solar panel repair services for domestic systems across the Midlands and UK. We carry out remote diagnosis where possible, attend sites to identify faults that cannot be diagnosed remotely and carry out repairs using appropriate replacement components. We work on any system, regardless of who installed it.

Solar Panel System Faults We Diagnose and Repair

Inverter Faults and Replacement

Inverter failure is the most common cause of total solar power system outage. SPI diagnoses inverter faults, carries out repairs where possible and supplies and installs replacement inverters where the unit has failed beyond repair.

Panel Damage and Replacement

Physical damage from weather, impact or manufacturing defects can affect individual panels. SPI inspects, tests and replaces damaged panels and assesses whether any associated wiring or mounting damage requires attention.

Electrical and Wiring Faults

DC isolator failures, AC connection faults, earthing issues and wiring degradation are common on older systems. SPI carries out electrical testing and repairs to current safety standards.

Battery System Faults

Battery faults, communication errors, capacity issues and software problems. SPI diagnoses battery system faults and advises on repair or replacement options, including for systems where the original manufacturer is no longer trading.

Getting a Fault Diagnosed Quickly

The most frustrating aspect of a solar power fault for most homeowners is not knowing what the problem is or how serious it is. A red light on the inverter could mean anything from a minor communication error to a complete inverter failure. A drop in generation shown in the monitoring app could be a panel fault, shading from a new obstruction, soiling or an inverter issue.

SPI carries out remote diagnosis as a first step where your monitoring data allows it. In many cases, a remote review of your system’s performance data narrows the fault significantly before an engineer visits the site. This saves time and, in some cases, resolves the issue without a callout.

Where a site visit is required, our engineers attend with the diagnostic equipment and the most commonly needed replacement components for the systems we regularly work on. We provide a written report of the fault found and the repair carried out, which is important for any warranty or insurance claim.

FAQs

My inverter is showing a fault light. What should I do?

Note the fault code if one is displayed and contact SPI. Many inverter fault codes can be assessed remotely from your monitoring data before an engineer visits.

My solar panel system has stopped generating energy entirely. Is this serious?

A complete loss of generation is usually an inverter fault or a tripped isolator. Check whether any isolator switches have tripped in your consumer unit or at the inverter. If the system does not restart, contact SPI for a remote assessment.

Can you replace an inverter from a brand that no longer trades in the UK?

Yes. SPI can replace inverters from discontinued brands with current-generation equivalents. We assess the existing system and specify the most appropriate replacement.

How long does a solar repair take?

Simple repairs are often completed in a single visit. Inverter replacement typically takes half a day. More complex faults involving wiring or multiple components may require a return visit. SPI provides a timescale at diagnosis stage.

Will my home insurance cover solar panel repairs?

This depends on your policy. Some home insurance policies cover solar panels as a permanent fixture. Storm damage is more likely to be covered than wear-related faults. SPI provides written reports suitable for insurance claims.
