Battery energy storage systems require active maintenance and monitoring to perform as expected over their design life. SPI Renewables provides BESS maintenance and support for commercial and domestic systems across the UK — including systems we did not install and systems where the original installer or manufacturer has ceased trading.

Why Battery Storage Systems Need Active Maintenance
Battery capacity degrades over time. Without monitoring, that degradation is invisible — the system appears to be working, bills reduce slightly less than expected, and the shortfall is attributed to other factors. By the time the degradation is identified, months or years of reduced performance may have already occurred.
Active monitoring changes this. A well-monitored battery system tracks state of charge, cycle counts, capacity trends and fault conditions continuously. Degradation is identified early. Faults are caught before they become failures. And the performance data provides the evidence base for any warranty claim while warranties remain valid.

Remote Performance Monitoring
Continuous monitoring of state of charge, cycle counts, capacity trends and fault conditions. Alerts configured to flag underperformance or developing faults before they become failures.
Planned Preventive Maintenance
Annual site visits covering battery system inspection, thermal management check, electrical connection inspection, firmware review and a written maintenance report. Scheduled in advance, not in response to a fault.
Reactive Support
Defined response times for fault attendance. Engineers with BESS experience, not generalists. Resolution tracked through to completion with written records for warranty and insurance purposes.

BESS Maintenance for Systems We Did Not Install
SPI maintains battery storage systems installed by others as a standard part of our service offer. This includes systems where the original installer has ceased trading, systems where the hardware manufacturer has gone into administration — as happened with GivEnergy in April 2026 — and systems that were properly installed but have never had a formal aftercare arrangement.
For these systems, SPI begins with a full health check. We inspect the battery hardware, review the installation documentation where available, assess the electrical connections and establish remote monitoring. We produce a written report on the system’s current condition, any concerns identified and our recommendations.
From that point, we agree an ongoing maintenance arrangement. The client has a named SPI contact who knows their system, a monitoring baseline against which future performance is measured and a defined process for reactive support when it is needed.
If you have a battery storage system with no active maintenance arrangement, the health check is the right starting point. The cost of identifying a developing fault early is a fraction of the cost of dealing with a system failure that could have been prevented.

Annual planned maintenance is the standard for most commercial BESS installations. Larger or more complex systems, or those participating in grid services, may benefit from more frequent inspection. SPI advises on the appropriate frequency at the outset.
Yes. SPI provides BESS maintenance regardless of who carried out the original installation. We begin with a health check to establish the current condition of the system.

State of health is a measure of a battery’s current capacity relative to its original rated capacity. A battery at 80 percent state of health stores and delivers 80 percent of its original energy. Tracking state of health over time allows degradation to be identified early and managed appropriately.
In many cases, yes. SPI carries out a full assessment and advises on what remedial work is required. Some degradation is irreversible, but active monitoring and maintenance from the point of assessment prevents further avoidable deterioration.
