Battery Energy Storage Systems for Homes and Businesses

Store the energy generated by your solar panels and use it at peak times when energy costs most.

SPI Renewables designs and installs battery energy storage systems for commercial, industrial and domestic clients across the UK. Alongside a new solar installation or as a retrofit to an existing system.

Battery Storage: Enhancing Your Solar Panels ROI

A solar PV system without battery storage exports surplus generation to the grid at Smart Export Guarantee rates. A battery system stores that generation and deploys it when it is worth more, during peak tariff periods, overnight or during periods of high grid prices.

For commercial clients on time-of-use tariffs, the financial impact is significant. For domestic clients with EV charging or overnight consumption, battery storage changes the payback calculation meaningfully. For agricultural and rural clients, it provides operational resilience that grid-only power cannot.

Battery costs have fallen considerably in recent years. Combined with rising grid tariffs and more sophisticated time-of-use pricing, the case for battery storage alongside solar panels and renewable energy systems has never been stronger.

Four Ways Battery Storage Solutions Creates Value

Energy Cost Reduction

Store generation during the day. Discharge during peak tariff periods. Reduce the amount of expensive grid electricity you consume. For businesses on variable or time-of-use tariffs, the savings are directly measurable.

Demand Charge Management

Many commercial energy contracts include demand charges based on peak consumption. A battery storage system limits peak demand by discharging at the right moment, reducing charges that can represent a significant portion of a commercial energy bill.

Grid Services Revenue

Larger commercial battery systems may be eligible to participate in grid services schemes operated by National Grid ESO. These pay battery owners for the ability to discharge energy rapidly in response to grid frequency events, creating a revenue stream alongside energy savings.

Resilience and Backup Power

A battery system configured for backup operation continues to power critical loads during a grid outage. For manufacturing, cold storage, agricultural operations or any business where a power interruption has a direct operational cost, this has real value.

Multi-Brand, Independent Batteries for Solar Power Systems, Built for the Long Term

SPI Renewables works with a range of established battery storage manufacturers and does not depend on any single supplier. We specify hardware based on what is most appropriate for each project, considering performance, warranty terms, track record and the long-term viability of the manufacturer’s UK operation.

We also provide long-term monitoring and maintenance for every BESS installation. Battery capacity degrades over time. Without active monitoring, owners often do not realise performance has declined until bills fail to reduce as expected. SPI monitors state of charge, cycle counts, capacity and fault conditions, and responds when issues arise.

If you have a existing battery storage system and are concerned about ongoing support, we can carry out a system assessment and discuss your options.

FAQs

How long do battery storage systems last?

Most commercial-grade lithium battery systems are warranted for 10 years with an expected useful life of 15 years or more with appropriate maintenance. Capacity degrades gradually over time..

Can battery storage be added to an existing solar system?

Yes, in most cases. SPI carries out an assessment of the existing system before recommending a retrofit solution. Some older installations require inverter upgrades to enable battery integration.

What size battery system do I need?

This depends on your energy consumption profile, solar system size and what you need the battery to do. SPI sizes systems based on your actual energy data, not rules of thumb.

Will a battery keep my power on if the grid goes down?

A battery system configured for backup operation can continue to power specified loads during a grid outage. Not all systems are configured this way by default. SPI specifies backup capability where it is a client priority.

My battery manufacturer has gone out of business. What now?

SPI provides assessments and maintenance for battery systems regardless of manufacturer status. We can advise on monitoring options and replacement where necessary.
